The skin is the body's biggest organ, and we all know that how your skin looks affects your mood, confidence and overall sense of wellbeing. Acne is a skin condition which impacts both mood and confidence, but treatments are available to alleviate many of acne's symptoms. At Nova Clinic London, our trained experts talk to clients about the different types of treatment on offer, depending on skin type and acne severity.
What causes acne?
Acne consists of spots like whiteheads, blackheads and cysts which reoccur on a long-term basis. Research suggests that the condition is caused by a sensitivity to androgen hormones - the main one being testosterone. Hormonal imbalances that can lead to acne include polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in women and thyroid imbalances. Teenagers going through puberty are also likely to go through a bout of acne as hormone levels adjust. When hormones become out of balance, sebum production can increase - which leads to more oily and acne-prone skin. While acne itself is often a result of hormonal changes or imbalances, maintaining a good skincare regime can avoid dirt building up and therefore can result in fewer acne outbreaks. In order to reduce the likelihood of acne cysts or deep cuts becoming scarred tissue, keep the affected area clean and try not to squeeze pimples - as this often results in the infection going deeper into the dermis.
Acne Treatments at Nova
Nova’s skin therapists have a variety of treatments successful at treating varying degrees of acne and improving skin health to prevent future outbreaks. Our most commonly prescribed acne treatments are skin peels , which work by drying out excess oils and killing off bacteria deep underneath the skin. We also have a range of facials, laser treatments and LED light treatments which work to calm acne prone skin and kill breakout causing bacteria
What happens during treatment?
Our treatments always start with a skin analysis and consultation to establish the correct peel to treat your concern. Following a deep cleanser and appropriate skin preparation a solution is applied to the skin surface and absorbed, before releasing the active acid component, which then works from within the skin. Your aesthetician will assess the progress of this treatment and halt the activity of the solution with a neutraliser when the correct depth has been reached. The treatments will feel tingly and hot, but not unpleasant. All peel and resurfacer treatments are carried out by trained and experienced aestheticians to ensure a safe and effective outcome.
