About Ageing & Lines
Why do wrinkles occur?
There are a number of reasons why wrinkles occur, the main one being less production of the proteins collagen and elastin. Both are important proteins for enabling the skin to 'bounce back' from a facial movement such as smiling or frowning. As we age, the skin isn't as readily able to produce collagen and elastin, which therefore makes wrinkles more likely.
While lines occur naturally throughout life, certain lifestyle choices hasten and worsen their appearance. The most obvious are smoking and excessive sunbathing without the use of SPF protection.
Skin which is unprotected from UVA rays becomes dry and flaky, due to it losing the essential oils and moisture that keeps it looking supple. The nicotine in smoking, meanwhile, narrows blood vessels close to the skin's surface. This results in it not receiving as much oxygen and nutrients, like vitamin A, causing the skin to sag and wrinkle prematurely.
As you age, it is often necessary to use penetrating serums and hydrators that reach deeper into the dermis to deliver nutrients essential for maintaining skin health. Make sure to drink plenty of water, and eat a lot of fruit containing vitamin C - like oranges - as this stimulates collagen production naturally.
